Tass talks to Kevin Clarke

Catching up with Kevin Clarke

April 15th 2006:

Tass: So i hear you’re coming out with a sequel to “Something very big” tell me about it?
Kevin: Something Very Big was my second video but in reality was the first one I had complete control over. It had a lot to do what with came after it in my career as it provided the template for the videos that were to come. Something Much Bigger takes the same theory -guys into each other having sex- and refines it.

Tass: Who’s in it?

Kevin:There are 11 models in it and it is the first performance for all of them. So while there are names that they all have none would ring a bell to anyone.

Tass: When will it be out?

Kevin:It should be ready in 2-3 weeks it is going to replication now.

Tass: How did you get started in gay porn?

.Kevin: Totally by accident. I have worked in Music management all of my life. At one point someone came to me and asked if I had ever managed models. I asked my alter-ego in NYC what she thought and she said ‘let’s see what he looks like.’ We decided to try working with him and he at that time told me that he had done a solo scene in a porn for a man named Richard Morgan. I went to meet with Richard to see if we could get the video pulled and he turned out to be a nice guy -well a nice guy for about 45 seconds. Right after that the model needed to go to a drug rehab and I sent him to a friend of mine who was a drug counselor (I am 17 years clean and sober) and he put him in a rehab.

Richard and I split the costs. At the time Richard was making a video called Feels So Good and he asked me if I want to see a shoot. Before I knew it I had written it edited it and even narrated it. Yes that is my voice sounding sexy in the background. It all happened fast but I seemed to have a talent for it. Also I had just rebounded from the 1995 Northridge Earthquake where my house was destroyed as I lived at ground zero in Reseda. I was looking for and open to new things.

Tass: How long have you've been in the business?

Kevin: Almost 11 years.

Tass: How many movies have you’ve done?

Kevin: 12 this will be my 13. For me they are labors of love as much as videos. I edit them as well as shoot and write them and every aspect of them is important to me.

Tass: With the recent rise in sales for barebacking movies where do you see gay porn years from now?

Kevin: I am not sure anyone knows the answer to that. I think that the major changes will have more to do with the changing viewing patterns of newer porn viewers as much as anything else.

Tass: What do you think about the whole barebacking thing?

Kevin: Well for me that is an easy subject to discuss though it has complex answers. The first person I knew that dies of AIDS was in 1982. It was so new that the funeral director would not embalm the body and there had to be a closed casket.

Since that time I have been to more funerals that I care to remember, have lost family members and many friends. I cannot get my mind around why anyone would engage in the practice, and beyond that, why anyone would try and profit from the practice.

Having said that; this is very much like the abortion debate those on either side do not hear the other and the reality is that barebacking is getting more and more of the market.

Twink barebacking in particular seems to be overtaking the market. I will never shoot bareback and have tried in every one of my video’s to show safe sex as part of the erotic nature of the scenes. In fact my first directorial job was a Jaguar film called “Pleasure Principle” It was was about a boy who fell in love online (Jason Miller) with a boy (Richie Fine) who tries to fuck him without a condom and he throws him out and then Richie comes back with a box of hundreds of condoms in it drops it on the bed and fucks him silly. I was nominated for Best Director and it for Best Video my first time out of the box. The video awards were however swept by Wash West and his first video Naked Highway.

Tass: Tell us a memorable moment from the set of one of your movies…

.Kevin:There are so many, but one comes to mind thinking of Noah. When we were shooting Something Very Big I wanted to do a double deep throat scene where Tony Donovan was deep throated by two guys. I asked the cast who could deep throat and Jason Nikas said he could and Noah put a devilish look on his face and if you know Noah you know just the look I mean and took a balloon and deep throated it for all to see. When we shot, Jason did get it down but gagged a bit but Noah took it like he was a bottomless pit. Luckily for Tony he has hips or he would have been swallowed whole.

Tass: What's something that you'd like to do that you already haven't done in films?

Kevin:You mean besides double fisting? [joking- see related story] Well for me the way I work is tell two guys to do what they would do were I not there and I shoot it.

So for me every scene is an adventure. Delving into people’s inner behavior to me it the most interesting and you never know what you will see.

Tass: Last but not least is Tyne Daly related to you?

Kevin: Ha-ha Now let’s get real. I am Tyne Daly. We were both At Chi Chi’s after party and she is dating Matt Rush.
